Privacy policy
The biggest law or “rule” in therapy is that what happens in a therapy office stays in a therapy office. We abide by this rule wholeheartedly at Quilling Counseling LLC not only because we are ethically bound, but because we want our clients to trust that what they share will stay between them and their therapist. There are exceptions to this rule and confidentiality will need to be broken if:
If there is suspected abuse of a minor, dependent adult, or elder abuse. This includes physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, or financial abuse of an elder.
If you have thoughts and plans to harm someone else, I must notify the police and the person that may be harmed.
If you have thoughts and plans to harm yourself with intent to act on said plans. If you are a minor this will include notifying your guardians, potentially creating a safety plan, and/or contacting a crisis number or going to the nearest hospital. If you are an adult, I will do my best to ensure your safety and if you are not willing to cooperate and your safety is at stake, I will take measures without your permission to ensure that safety to the best of my ability.
Minors: Minor clients have a right to privacy and confidentiality. What they talk about in therapy will stay between them and their therapist, unless they request others to be involved/informed. Parents/legal guardians and proper authorities will be notified if safety concerns are present without the client's consent.
Privacy will continue to be discussed in therapy given your rights and the importance of this rule. Open discussion with you will also take place if reporting or breaking privacy must take place related to reasons above.
